What is Blog Flipping?

I’m Jenn from That Millennial Mama and I make money flipping blogs.

The concept is pretty simple. It’s like flipping a house. Have you heard of house flipping? It works like this: An investor buys a property at a low price.

They fix it up, make improvements, then flip it (sell it) at a profit. Then, they usually move on and do it all over again with another property. Well, you can do this with blogs!

Why would anybody wanna do this? There are many reasons:

• It’s flexible
• It’s fun
• It's very lucrative
• You get to be creative
• You are your own boss
• You can eventually make this your full time job

Here’s a recent real life example of a lifestyle blog recently flipped:

• Monthly income grown to $1,100/month in about 5-6 months
• Monthly expenses under $100/month
• Sold for $5,500

How did this blog flipping thing all start?

It all started a few years ago when I sold my first ecommerce business. I ran the business for several years before deciding to sell. I was looking for what to do next.

I was browsing Pinterest and I came across this pin from Michelle of Making Sense of Cents. It was an income report pin saying she earned $60K per month (yes per month) from blogging!

After reading the entire post, I went back to Pinterest to learn as much as possible about blogging. I had some knowledge about influencers as they were a prime source of traffic for the ecommerce store, but I had no idea you could actually make a living as a blogger.

While the majority of bloggers may not make a full time income blogging, many do!

So, I decided to start my first blog. It did fairly well, reaching around 10K page views in the first 30 days, going on to accumulate over 10K social media followers in months following.

At around 9 to 10 months in, I decided it was the right time to sell. I sold that first blog for five figures and moved onto the next.

Here are some blogs I have built and sold:

• Best of Budgets
• Drink Coffee & Prosper
• That Mom Travels

Fast forward to today. About a year and 10 websites later, I call myself a blog flipper.

How to Get Started

It’s a lot easier than you may think. It all starts with a concept. Your concept or niche is what you’ll blog about.

Some examples of niches: fashion, general lifestyle, parenting, personal finance, food, career, etc.

You build a whole website around any of those (or other) topics. You’ll grow it, monetize it, and at some point in the future, sell it! This is blog flipping!

There are two main ways to get started: buy a site or build a site.

Buying a site is the faster approach. You buy an established site, fix it up and sell it at a profit. Simple.

Building a site allows you to build from the ground up, then fix it up, grow it's traffic, monetize it, and then sell it for a profit.

I go the build route because it’s fun for me. I’ve flipped so many sites, I really STILL enjoy the process. I find it very rewarding and I’ve made a lot of friends and learned a lot along the way.

Now, I’m teaching others to do what I do!
