As I always say, there is a LOT of competition for remote jobs. For this reason, you want a resume that's strong and will stand out.
However, creating the perfect resume can be an extremely time-consuming and confusing task if you are not sure about how best to present yourself to employers.
That's where AI tools like ChatGPT give you an edge!
AI tools like ChatGPT have become a normal part of everyday life and work. While you should never let AI invent experience or qualifications you don't have, it can save you a tremendous amount of time when you're organizing your thoughts and improving your resume.
Below, I'll explain to you how to use ChatGPT to create a resume that genuinely shows your professional strengths.
Why ChatGPT for Your Resume?
ChatGPT is an AI assistant that can help you write, edit, organize, and improve many types of documents, including resumes.
Here is why ChatGPT can help when working on your resume:
- Saves Time: You are able to get a good first draft of your resume within minutes! You may want to tweak what it gives you, but the basic structure will be there.
- Customization: It allows you to tailor your resume to different job applications through different formats and wording.
- Helps With ATS Keywords: ChatGPT can help you naturally include keywords from a job posting, making your resume more likely to get through Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS).
- Eliminates Writer's Block: If you are stuck on describing your experience or skills, ChatGPT can generate key phrases and wording ideas.
A Quick Privacy Note Before You Start
Before you paste anything into ChatGPT or any AI tool, just know that it's a good idea to leave out personally identifying details. That means your full name, phone number, email, exact employer names, and precise dates of employment.
Instead, keep a stripped down version of your resume handy, one with your real experience and skills intact but with the identifying details removed. One of my readers had that brilliant idea! You can always add those back in yourself once ChatGPT has helped you shape and polish the content.
This is especially smart if you are in a vulnerable season of life, like a job search, when protecting your personal information matters most.
Step One – Give ChatGPT the Basics
Tell ChatGPT you need to create a resume. Then, give it the following:
- A summary of your professional experience
- Job titles and descriptions from previous positions held
- Skills, education, and relevant certifications you might have
After you've given the above details, ChatGPT will organize them into a proper resume structure. For example:
Prompt:
“I need a resume written. My name is Jane Doe, and I'm a marketing manager with five years of experience at XYZ Company. I specialize in digital marketing, SEO, and content strategy. I have a bachelor's degree in marketing, and I have certifications in proofreading and freelance writing. Can you create a professional one-page resume based on this information?”
This way, ChatGPT can give you a nicely structured draft that you can then improve.
Step 2 – Tailor the Resume to Any Specific Job
Once the main elements of the resume have been generated by ChatGPT, you can get more specific by targeting a job description.
That is where it really shines! ChatGPT can suggest adjustments so your resume better reflects the main elements of the job being applied for.
For example, if you're applying for a digital marketing-related job but the company puts more emphasis on social media strategy, you can ask ChatGPT to highlight your relevant skills and experience.
Prompt:
“Here is my resume and the job description. Please tailor my resume to better reflect my social media strategy experience while keeping everything truthful and avoiding exaggeration. [Insert Resume and Job Description Here]”
ChatGPT can then tailor your resume to fit the role, naturally including keywords that may help it get noticed by hiring managers and Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS).
Step 3 – Create Bullet Points for Work Experience
One of the trickiest parts of resume writing involves creating bullet points that summarize the responsibilities and achievements from jobs you held in the past.
That's where ChatGPT can help you turn long job descriptions into punchy, results-driven bullet points.
Prompt:
“The following is a list of my responsibilities while working as a marketing manager at XYZ Company: Led digital campaigns, analyzed marketing performance, and managed social media. Please create at least two resume bullet points from this information.”
ChatGPT may then give you something like this:
- Led digital marketing campaigns that increased website traffic by 25 percent.
- Analyzed key performance metrics to improve marketing strategies, resulting in a 15 percent increase in conversion rates.
- Managed all social media platforms, increasing the follower base by 30 percent in six months.
This turns your experience into tangible achievements that grab an employer's attention.
However, make sure every detail is truthful. If ChatGPT adds numbers or accomplishments you did not provide, remove them or replace them with accurate information. Never exaggerate your experience or include information on your resume that is not factual.
Step 4 – Format Your Resume Using ChatGPT
You can also get advice from ChatGPT on how to format your resume. It can give you guidance on things like:
- Font styles and sizes
- How to arrange sections such as Work Experience, Skills, and Education
- Whether to use a chronological or functional resume format
- Whether your resume should stay to one page
- How to create an ATS-friendly layout
- The best file format to use when submitting your resume
For example:
Prompt:
“What's the best way to format my resume if I want to highlight my skills over my work experience? Please recommend an ATS-friendly layout and tell me whether I should submit it as a PDF or Word document.”
ChatGPT may suggest using a functional resume format, which places greater emphasis on skills, especially if you are changing careers or have gaps in your employment history.
Step 5 – Review and Polish the Final Draft
Once you have produced and refined your resume with ChatGPT, go through it carefully to make sure it reflects your personal style and does not contain inaccuracies or wording that doesn't sound like you.
Make sure to:
- Double-check dates and other details to be sure everything is accurate.
- Make sure the resume reads naturally and isn't too repetitive.
- Add any finishing touches that reflect your individual qualifications and experience.
If you are uncertain about any section, you can ask ChatGPT to paraphrase or polish certain parts of the resume.
Prompt:
“Can you make this sound more professional: ‘I worked on social media accounts'?”
ChatGPT may suggest:
“Managed and optimized multiple social media accounts, improving engagement and audience growth.”
This is helpful if you know what you want to say but can't think of a professional way to phrase it!
In Conclusion
ChatGPT can make resume creation, which is stressful for most people, much simpler.
If you need to create a new resume or update your existing one, ChatGPT can save you hours of work by helping you organize your experience, improve your wording, and tailor your resume for specific jobs.
Just remember that the final resume should always reflect your real experience and sound like you.
That said, I firmly believe a human touch is best. There are people out there you can pay to do your resume for you. However, not all of us have the budget for that.
If you don't, give ChatGPT a try and see if it meets your needs.
Good luck!
