Today we have a Brainfuse review for you. Brainfuse is a tutoring company that hires people to tutor students online. They offer tutoring for third grade up through twelfth grade, as well as higher education tutoring for college students.
Tutoring sessions are available seven days a week. In this Brainfuse review, you'll learn more about how it all works.
There are lots of companies offering work from home tutoring jobs these days, and (founded in 1999) Brainfuse has been around longer than many of them.
If you want to stay in the loop on new tutoring leads and other remote work as I find them, my free weekly newsletter is an easy way to do that.
Brainfuse Review
How much does Brainfuse pay their tutors?
Brainfuse pay will vary depending on the subject and the level of tutoring. More complex subjects and higher education roles pay more.
Per current Glassdoor data, general tutors at Brainfuse typically earn in the $16 to $27 hourly range, while academic tutors in more specialized subjects can earn between $29 and $47 per hour.
That said, many tutors in recent reviews note that the pay feels low relative to the qualifications required, and the compensation rating from tutors on Glassdoor is below average for the education industry.
How is payment made with Brainfuse?
Payments are made through direct deposit to a bank account or mailed check, and tutors are paid every two weeks.
What are the requirements to become a Brainfuse tutor?
Requirements vary depending on the type of tutoring role. For their Higher Education tutoring program, Brainfuse requires at least a master's degree. For other tutoring roles, a bachelor's degree may be sufficient, though this can vary.
Prior teaching or tutoring experience is required across the board.
You must also submit to a background check as well as reference checks before you can be hired. You must also have a computer with internet access, preferably high-speed.
What is the application process like?
To work for Brainfuse, you have to send them your resume to [email protected]. If they are interested, they'll email you back with instructions to get started on training.
You'll also be asked to send in some paperwork. If you get through their training and are hired, you can begin work.
Training is minimal — pretty much just some documentation to read before you start.
What is involved in tutoring for Brainfuse?
You schedule yourself for preferred shifts to work with students. You are not always working one-on-one — often you will be tutoring more than one student in a single session, which some tutors find frustrating.
One thing worth knowing before you apply: shifts are competitive. Brainfuse tutors across different time zones are all competing for the same available shifts, and recent reviewers note it can be difficult to secure consistent hours. This makes it a poor choice for anyone who needs reliable, predictable weekly income from a single source.
There is also something called Instant Access (IA), which is an on-demand homework help feature where students can log on and connect with an available tutor. This can provide more spontaneous earning opportunities outside of scheduled shifts.
As is probably to be expected, the students you tutor are not always nice and friendly. Some Brainfuse tutors report being sworn at online, and there is little to no recourse for you when this happens.
It is also worth knowing that student complaints can result in account deactivation with little notice or explanation, and several recent reviewers describe this as a real concern. Having a thick skin and managing expectations going in is important if you pursue this.
If you are interested in other types of homework help jobs from home, I have a separate post covering several companies in that space.
Is this flexible work?
Yes, it's very flexible. You are more or less able to create your own schedule, although at times it may be hard to get the hours you want, particularly because of the shift competition mentioned above.
As you may have guessed, work tends to dry up during summer break and other common academic breaks. So it's probably not wise to depend on this full-time.
Does Brainfuse hire tutors outside the United States?
No. All Brainfuse tutors must reside in the United States.
Final Thoughts on Brainfuse
Brainfuse currently holds a 2.9 out of 5 star rating from tutors on Glassdoor, which is 22% below average for the education industry.
Recent reviews on both Glassdoor and Indeed flag low pay, inconsistent hours, competitive shift grabbing, minimal management support, and account deactivation without warning as recurring concerns.
That said, if you meet the requirements and are looking for something flexible to do from home on the side, Brainfuse may be worth considering. Just go in with realistic expectations. Do not depend on it as your full-time remote job since you will see little to no work during summer and other academic breaks, and hours are not guaranteed even during the school year.
It may be good for some side income if you meet the requirements, but it works best as one of several income streams rather than your only one.

If Brainfuse interests you but you also want to explore other options, FlexJobs is one of the best places to find vetted remote tutoring and education jobs from real companies.
Unlike general job boards, every listing on FlexJobs is researched and screened by a human before it goes live — which means no scam postings, no content mills, and no listings that turn out not to be remote after all.
For tutors and educators specifically, FlexJobs regularly lists roles in online tutoring, curriculum development, instructional design, academic coaching, and education support across a wide range of subjects and grade levels.
Many of the education roles pay well above what independent tutoring platforms offer, and some come with benefits and employee status rather than contractor arrangements.
