Writing and Editing Work at Pure Content

July 25, 2011 17 comments by

Writing and EditingIt’s been a while since I’ve done a review of an upfront pay writing company — I’ve chosen to focus on other kinds of work at home opportunities lately since I’ve more or less given up freelance writing myself and also because I already have so many writing jobs listed here. But I’ve been seeing a lot of chatter in forums about writing and editing for Pure Content, so I decided to find out what I could for you and get it posted.
What is Pure Content?
Pure Content is a “web content creation company” that employs over 1000 writers to create unique content for people who need a lot of it. They’ve been

Website User Testing – Earn $10 Per Test

July 22, 2011 29 comments by

Website User TestingThere are a lot of sites popping up lately that will allow you to sign up and earn money for testing out websites. Today I have decided to do a review of Usertesting.com. While I would say that doing this type of work is extra money only, it could be a good bit of extra money — which means this might be a very nice “egg” to have access to! Here is more about how this works:
What You Do
Website user testing involves using an online screen recorder. This is something you don’t have to buy — once you’re signed up, you’ll have access to it through the User Testing website. The screen recorder will make note of…

Find Freelance Work on Elance

July 13, 2011 12 comments by

Find freelance workToday’s post is going to center around Elance — a site where you can sign up and get paid for doing almost any type of freelance work. I should preface this by saying that there are definitely some problems with Elance in regard to working from home, but it can also be useful. People have had varying experiences there, but most of the complaints I see point to the same problem — the providers (people looking for workers) tend to want extremely cheap labor and are often willing to bypass experienced, knowledgeable people who want to be paid what they are worth just to get that. So now that that is out of…

Worried About a Medical Transcription Scam?

July 11, 2011 7 comments by

medical transcription scam

Medical transcription is one field that many people would love to get into doing at home. Unfortunately, the main concern with getting started for most is the worry of being taken in by a medical transcription scam. To avoid a scam in this field, you should be on the alert for any opportunity that requires you to pay money for your own medical transcribing business. Buying this business could cost you thousands of dollars and the company selling it to you is in most cases very unlikely to use your transcribing services afterward. Another thing you should watch out for are companies who want to sell you expensive software to give you on-the-job training. This is problematic because in…

Get Paid to Listen to Music With Slice the Pie

June 6, 2011 39 comments by

get paid to listen to musicSomething I’ve been doing a little of the last few days is Slice the Pie — a site that will actually let you get paid to listen to music! Before you read any further, you should know that doing this is definitely just an extra money thing, BUT it’s a really fun one and the extra money you can earn will likely amount to much more than the small change you get here and there from things like YouData or Instant Cash Sweepstakes. The extra money you earn from your participation in Slice the Pie could actually add up pretty quickly.

Scribie Work From Home Transcription

May 28, 2011 27 comments by

Scribie is a transcription company that actually used to be known as CallGraph, and they allow people to work from home. They recently moved to another domain and gave themselves the new name. My sister sent me the link to this site a few days ago because someone had emailed her referring her to it, but she wasn’t interested in transcription work and thought I might be. I’m actually not too keen on transcription myself, but I know that many of you are, so I thought this would be a good opportunity to review here.
How does Scribie work?
Scribie hires freelance transcribers with different levels of experience, meaning that you have a good chance of getting on with…

Amazon mTurk – Get Paid for Doing Small Tasks

May 26, 2011 16 comments by

Amazon mTurk (Amazon Mechanical Turk) is a site where you can sign up as a worker and earn money for doing short little odd jobs. The things offered there vary greatly — you might be doing data entry, search engine evaluation, and even writing work. I’ve personally done all three of those things through Amazon and then some. The way it works is pretty simple: People who need small tasks done requiring human and not computer intelligence can post these jobs up on the job board at mTurk. As a worker, you can sort through these jobs, select the ones you want to do, and get started. Some of the work is fun, while some of it is rather tedious and…

Work Force Logic Search Engine Evaluation

May 17, 2011 28 comments by

Yes, it’s another search engine evaluation post! Work Force Logic is the one company on this site offering this type of work that I haven’t really covered, so I figured I’d go ahead and do a review since I believe they are currently hiring at the moment anyhow. This company is very similar to Lionbridge, Leapforce, and Butler Hill — all three of which I have reviewed in the past. If you’re completely unfamiliar with what a search engine evaluator does, you might want to read this post on search engine evaluating in general first.

ETS – Home Test Scoring

May 13, 2011 12 comments by

ETS is a company that pays people to score tests for various educational institutions both online and on-site, but in this post I’m going to focus on the online scoring because it’s an excellent way to make some money from home if you’re qualified to score for the company. The work you do for ETS is very similar to what you do for Pearson, whom I recently posted about. ETS has been around since 1947, and if you work for them, you’ll have the opportunity all kinds of tests and assessments, possibly even SAT results.
How much does ETS pay home scorers?
The pay rate varies depending on what tests you’re scoring. Each type of test is considered a…

Mystery Shopping with Marketforce

May 8, 2011 1 comment by

Mystery shopping is something that lots of people want to do and then become thoroughly disappointed when the programs they join turn out to be not quite as cool as they expected. In addition to that, there are also tons of scams out there disguising themselves as legitimate mystery shopping opportunities. Fortunately, Marketforce is one mystery shopping company that most people seem thoroughly satisfied with, and I say “most” because I do know at least one person who wasn’t as impressed as others seem to be and didn’t get access to many local mystery shop opportunities. Marketforce has been around since 1972, and the reason the majority of people do seem to like them so much is…

Butler Hill Work at Home Search Engine Evaluation

May 4, 2011 15 comments by

Butler Hill is a company that regularly hires people to work from home doing search engine evaluation. They’ve been around for about 16 years, and they are rumored to pay better than Leapforce and Lionbridge — two of their top competing companies. If you’re unclear on what search engine evaluation actually is, you might want to read “What is a Search Engine Evaluator?” first.

How much does Butler Hill pay?

The rate I’ve seen quoted is $15 per hour. Leapforce and Lionbridge both pay roughly $1 or $2 less than that. Specifics on pay rates for these companies aren’t widely available because employees have…
