Avon is one of the oldest, most well-known direct selling opportunities out there. Another plus is that unlike many other companies, this one is very inexpensive to get started with. A current consultant for Avon, Trista Foulk, answered some questions with everything you need to know about becoming an Independent Sales Representative with Avon.
Avon has recently made some big changes to help representatives get their business off to a great start in 2014.
What is the total investment required to start up my business?
The cost used to be just $10 but has recently changed to $15 as of the start of 2014’s Campaign 8 (Trendsetters C-10). With this new cost, representatives will now receive a start up kit which will be presented in a beautifully designed envelope and include samples, full-size product, Quick Start guide, motivational CD, and “Ask Me How” pin. With these added items to the basic kit comes the new $15 cost to join. In addition, representatives will now have the option to purchase an exciting new Business Booster Kit within their first 3 campaigns. The cost of this Business Booster is $35 and will come in a “wow” presentation box and includes a bundle of products (5-7 full-size products) samples, motivation DVD, Success Magazine and training.
Will I receive materials to start my business?
You will receive 20 Avon brochures with your $15 kit (10 each for your first two selling campaigns) along with the above listed new items. As a new Representative you also have the opportunity to purchase selected products and samples at special promotional prices.
What is a selling campaign?
The two week selling period supported by a brochure that offers customers different products 26 times a year.
What information will be required from me in order to establish my account?
As an Avon Representative, you will be given an automatic line of credit ($250-$300), as such we will require the standard personal information (Drivers License or State ID) that is requested whenever credit is extended, including your social security number. All personal info provided is used to generate your line of credit amount. A credit check is NOT required to become a rep and your social security number is provided as proof of identity and tax purposes. It is also used for bonus checks and additional earnings if you decide to begin the Leadership program (optional and free).
How much can I make selling Avon?
Prior to the start of 2014’s Campaign 8 a new representative would earn 40% commission on core Avon products during their first 4 orders guaranteed ( for 2 months, with a $50 order when their order was placed online). Beginning March 14th 2014, a new Representative will now follow the same earnings structure as all other Representatives and no longer receive guaranteed 40% higher earnings during her first 4 Campaigns. They will earn at the level relating to their order value. The new earning structure, which has not changed in over 10 years is now: $0-$49.99=0%, $50-$149.99=20%, $150-$294.99=30%, $295-$439.99=35%, $440- $924.99=40%, $925-$1,574.99=45%, $1575 or greater= 50%. The new earning structure has only changed by about $5. Throughout your Avon career, you can continue to earn up to 50% on beauty products depending on your order size. You can increase your earnings potential by recruiting, training, and mentoring new Representatives.
Do I have to keep product on hand?
At Avon, you are never required to keep a stock of products on hand. You may find, however, that your customers have personal favorites that are helpful for you to have available for last-minute needs. In addition, as a Representative, you are offered exclusive promotional opportunities to purchase products in advance. So you may or may not want to keep products on hand. It is completely your choice.
How often do I have to place an order?
Avon has 26 sales campaigns throughout the year. Each campaign reflects a two-week selling period marked by promotional offers and/or new product introductions. Contacting your customers every campaign gives them the opportunity to purchase their Avon favorites, see new products, and take advantage of special offers. You’ll find that contacting new and potential customers on a consistent basis will result in your placing an order each campaign. Orders are place every two weeks and arrive 2 days later via UPS. You will place each order on your given amount of credit and pay your previous balance with each new order.
How do I receive future brochures?
Every two weeks, when you place a product order, you purchase your future brochures. Brochures are always ordered four weeks ahead so that you will have them in plenty of time to include them in your customer’s orders and to share them with new potential customers.
Do I have to pay for shipping, or do my customers pay a shipping fee?
As long as you place your order on time, there is a one time shipping fee for you. If you wish to receive an order at a different time from your regular scheduled delivery you have the option of receiving it for an additional fee. Shipping charges range from $5.95 to $10.95 and most frequently are $6.95.
You can sell through your personal website which you are given for FREE when you become a representative. Your customers can either order products that will be shipped to them directly from Avon or that will be included in your order for you to deliver to customers. When a customer orders from your personal website Avon handles all shipments and returns on those orders. All you do is earn on direct delivery purchases from your website.
How do I pay for my order?
Payment to Avon is due two weeks after your order is shipped. This gives you time to deliver your orders and collect payment from your customers. You can pay by check, money order, credit card, or online directly from your checking account using Avon Quickpay.
Am I required to attend meetings?
No, meetings attendance is not required. Avon offers extensive on-line training that you access 24 hours a day, seven days a week to enhance your business. Though you are not required to attend meetings, many representatives enjoy attending as they are much fun. District managers of Avon do a wonderful job of providing free samples, selling tips and plenty of additional rewards for attendance. Meetings within your district can be quite uplifting and really help you stay focused as well as encouraged to build your business. Group support is a great way to get each other motivated and stay excited about your new business.
Avon may hold group meetings in your area designed to share product training or program incentives. If so, you will be contacted in advance in order to add the event to your calendar.
Do I have to have parties?
You are not required to have any parties. However, many Representatives find group selling to be a very lucrative way to sell more products, broaden their customer base, and build their team. If you choose to participate in group selling, Avon offers various training and support materials to assist you.
Is it hard to sell Avon?
Avon is one of the best known brands in the world. Rarely will you run into someone who has not heard of Avon. If you follow the provided training by Avon, it will not be difficult.
What happens after I sign up?
In a few easy steps, you can become an Avon Representative and start your own business. Promptly after you sign up, you can go online, explore the product line, and start your training. You may also build your personal website to sell products to customers and manage your business. Within the next few days, I will follow up with you and offer additional personal training opportunities to ensure that you get your business off to a great start.
If a customer decides she doesn’t want or like a product that she ordered from me, do I have to absorb the cost?
No! All Avon products have a full 100% guarantee, even if it has been used. Just return the item to Avon for a full refund or exchange.
What if I become an Avon representative and then decide that Avon isn’t for me?
All you have to do is pay your bill in full and simply discontinue accessing your account. When you stop your account is automatically closed after a period of time.
