in Direct Sales, Home Business

avon-overview Avon is one of the oldest, most well-known direct selling opportunities out there. Another plus is that unlike many other companies, this one is very inexpensive to get started with. A current consultant for Avon, Trista Foulk, answered some questions about the Avon business and how to get started selling the products.

Can you tell me about Avon and the kinds of products you sell?

Avon is the world’s largest direct selling company specializing in beauty products, fragrances, personal care, jewelry, accessories, clothing, children and home products. Avon sells their products through Avon Representatives. There are over 6.5 million women actively selling in 140 countries. The company was founded in 1886, and offered women the rare opportunity to earn their own money 34 years before women in the U.S. won the right to vote. Becoming a Representative gives you the opportunity to share and sell some of the most high-tech, high-quality and highly appealing facial creams, makeups, lotions, and hair care products. You may have heard the title, “Avon: The Company For Woman.” Some of Avon’s best customers are their representatives because the products are just that great. Greatness developed by 350 scientists and technicians focus on creating products that are some of the most advanced in the world.

Who can sell Avon and what makes Avon different from other opportunities?

Anyone can join. Women mostly do but there has been an increasing number of men choosing to also say yes to Avon. Avon is your own business. You don’t work for anyone but yourself. Avon only gives you guidelines and tools to run your business. As a representative you are your own boss. You’re not required to keep any stock on hand, not required to log a certain number of hours each week, you’re not required to track down hostesses to have parties or for that matter required to throw parties unless you absolutely want to. You don’t even have to recruit others in. Avon is your business how you want it to be. You can be involved as much or as little as you’d like. Lots of people even become representative simply to receive the representative discount on their own items. It’s strictly up to you.

Why choose it over anything else?

With its low startup cost of just $10, its very appealing to anyone who is looking to make a career choice. Avon is for anyone who may be looking for that extra boost to becoming a successful business owner without having to invest a large amount of money. Even if you’re just looking to earn extra money each month you can start out working part time and customize your business to work with your financial needs. It is what you choose to make it. Avon also provides their representatives with a complete customizable website. So your customers can shop via your personal website where and select personal delivery or direct delivery shipment. Your personal website is free when you join Avon and there is no monthly cost to maintain it. Anyone can shop from your website as long as they have your personal URL address.

What is the age requirement to become a Avon Representative? Who can sell Avon?

Anyone can sell Avon. Women do mostly but there is an increase of men who choose to say yes to Avon. You just need to be at least 18 years of age to become a Avon Rep. To become a Mark representative you just need to be 17. Typically woman between the ages of 17 and 28 consider becoming Mark reps. Mark reps sell only the Mark line of products by Avon. College students often do well with Mark having access to a large number of friends who are students. Mark products prove to be very appealing those style savvy women attending college and also give young women the ability to make some extra cash while going to school. Avon reps are able to sell all Avon products. Mark, Avon and Tiny Tillia so I personally think being a Avon rep has more advantages. You can achieve the same with either.

What if you are under the age of 17 and want to join Avon or Mark?

That’s easy. With your parent’s permission you can easily still sell Avon or Mark. Your parent would sign up in their name and allow their young adult to do the selling. When your teenager becomes 17 they can then officially sign up in their own name and continue to build their business. It will be a great way for them to earn money for all those extra teenage expenses. Allow your teenager to gain important life skills at an early age. Skip the paper route! Say Yes To Avon!

What is the percent of commission you get from your sales?

As a new Rep you make 40% of all sales during your first 4 campaigns (about 2 months if the orders are $50 or larger, and you submit them online.) After the initial period, your earnings are determined by how big your order size is.$1550 or more=50%, $900 – $1549=45%, $425 – $899=40%,$285 – $424=35%, $145 – $284=30%, $25 – $144=20%, $00 – $24=0% Licensed products are earned at 20% commission; such as clothing, watches or household goods. You can also sell Avon online as an eRep. As an Avon Rep, you also sell Mark. When you sign up you are given a full working website to help build your business. From this website you can sell and manage your entire business.

Is there a monthly minimum to meet in order to stay active?

All that is needed to stay as an active rep is placing on time orders at the end of each campaign. Campaigns run typically for about 12-14 days. There are no minimum order requirements. Some Representatives and District managers even offer prizes or free product drawings to those on their team who place orders on time during each campaign.

Is there any training or educational requirements to become a representative?

No. Avon provides free training called Beauty of Knowledge which is located on Youravon.com site. Youravon.com is a website where you can manage your business and it provides everything you need to be successful. On the website you’ll find training courses, business tools, invoicing, automatic emailing service, e-cards, ordering, everything you need to keep track of your business progress and customers. Youravon.com will also allow you to manage eParties, fundraisers and create events.

How much does it cost and how can I get started?

You can get started by contacting an Avon representative! Any US Resident can join my team and I am always excited to welcome new people aboard. Simply contact me for more info. Saying yes to Avon will be the easiest thing you’ll ever do. Join My Team Today and type in loveyourface under reference code. You can also LIKE me on Facebook.

As mentioned above, sign up is just $10 and also includes a starter kit with brochures and business materials, which will be given to you by the Avon Representative you contact. This representative will become your mentor. Having a mentor will be your greatest advantage to becoming successful. This person will help you every step of the way no matter how involved you decide to be. Once signed up you will only be expected to pay for any business materials needed from there on. Just as with any business. There is a variety of business materials that are available for you to purchase but any of those items can also be purchased from wherever you choose. Like business cards, stickers, signage, flyers and labels. You can also expect to pay small fees for samples needed, forms, flyers, merchandise bags, call back notes, etc. All such items can be tax deductions and are only purchased if you decide you would like them.

Avon is backed by a 100% guarantee. If your customer is not 100% satisfied, you can return an item for a full refund or exchange, at no extra cost to you as a representative.

Customers can shop via your personal website where they can select personal delivery or direct delivery. Your personal website is free when you join Avon and there is no monthly cost to maintain it. Anyone can shop from your website as long as they have your personal URL address.

Some caviats:

Check with your neighborhood to make sure there is not already an Avon rep. in your area. If there is one, the odds of a new person selling is low.

If you want an Avon website (to sell via the internet), it costs $15 a month (unless there are special promos going on). Also, when you sign the contract, you are NOT supposed to create a website that is not on the Avon.com domain. Doing so can get you kicked out of being a rep if you are reported.

Melissa, Can you explain further by what you mean about this “Check with your neighborhood to make sure there is not already an Avon rep in your area. If there is one, the odds of a new person selling is low.” I don’t understand why if there is a rep currently in any one area that there wouldn’t be another or even many for that matter. Avon runs solely on its representatives. The more the merry! We all work together. Each rep has the opportunity to build their own teams. Those teams then can work together or branch off to start their own teams and so on. When you start adding to your team this is called Leadership. So the odds, as you say, of a new rep being in a area are low is false. The odds of a new rep being in any area are extremely high since many Avon Representatives are in Leadership. We sign new people up on a daily basis.

As for the $15 a month for a website, i don’t know where your getting that info. Seems to me that its old info. Or this price varies from district to district. My district is currently selling Campaign 6 while some are only just selling Campaign 4. This alone could make a difference. I am a current representative, I paid just $10 which included my kit and full website given to me by Avon. You are right about not creating a website that is not an avon.com domain (which i have not and don’t intend to) You can however link your avon.com site to anywhere you chose as long as your customers are redirected to your avon.com site. If you do a few random searches on Facebook or even just on the web you’ll find millions of Avon Representative online working from their own built websites that redirect back to their avon.com sites. It is perfectly fine. Avon has been around for so long that they understand the changing of technology and how people communicate. It more so the Avon has evolved and so have Avon’s representatives. Its all about growing.
Avon has large events all the time. Events for recruiting and selling which are open to the public free of charge to attend. If anyone is interested in attending one of these events contact me to find an even in your area! You can find my contact info above.

This info I got was first hand. I was an Avon rep. a few years ago (2009-2010). My mom was an Avon rep. while I was growing up too.

My personal experience was that if a neighborhood already had an Avon rep, they didn’t want to order from someone new. With my mom, she found out the District leader was in our neighborhood.

As for the website, when I was with Avon it was $7.50 per campaign (equals $15 a month) UNLESS you had a sale over a certain amt. (I can’t remember the amt. right now). When I ended my contract with Avon, they no longer had that stipulation. This was in addition to the $10 I paid when I started.

Yes, the info might have changed since I have been a rep. I still think it is good to ask plenty of questions before jumping into something. Avon is a good company IF you have the customer backing (no one could afford to buy when I was working with Avon).

The nice thing is the very low start up costs ($10 — which at the time included a couple of samples, Avon company info, and 20 campaign books (10 for current campaign and 10 for next campaign).
