Organization is a word that not many people like to hear while they are working inside of the home or outside of the home. I think I get so anxious about my home because there are four of us and that equals a lot of chaos. I have come to the conclusion that when I am organized, my days run a lot smoother. Of course, I have a one year old and a three year old, so my days are always VERY unpredictable. I wanted to take some time to share with you some ways that I stay organized while running my own content business.
Write down your to do list
I prefer to write down my to-do list because then it is right in front of my face all day. Sometimes I will open up an excel sheet and just list everything I need to do. Some people prefer to use task websites that help them check off tasks as they get done. Google has a task list attached to the email. Just a few are:
Tadalist.com
Voo2do.com
Toodledo.com
Teux Deux
All of these are free and great tools to use while you jot down your to do list. I have to keep in mind that there are tasks besides working that I need to keep track of and these tools help me along the way.
Do as much as you can the night before
My mom always taught me to lay out my school clothes the night before. I kind of carry that idea with me about everything. If I have somewhere to go the next day, I try to pack my bags beforehand. The same goes for clothing, I always lay out clothing before if I have somewhere important to go the next day. I also try to tidy up my house the night before, so I don’t have to spend as much time cleaning in the morning. Just think of all the little things you can do to help make your next day a lot smoother.
- Set out frozen meat the night before.
- Start a load of laundry before you go to bed.
- Start an outline of a project before you call it a night.
- Put up a few marketing ads before you go to bed.
Take care of yourself as much as you can
This is one area I need to be more proactive about. I have decided that I am more organized when I am refreshed and taking good care of myself. I have been eating healthy and exercising more and that has helped my days run a lot smoother. As hard as it is to do, try and do one thing for yourself each day so you have enough energy to get through the day and stay organized!
Good luck and please share your methods for staying organized while working at home!

Excellent advice! I just wrote an article for Article Document on how to work more effectively, and one of the things I mentioned was getting things ready in advance. I’m also going to be writing a post for WAHA sometime in the near future on a time management technique I’m trying out…
Thanks Erica. I’ll have to go back and read your article
