in Education, General Tutoring, Non-Phone

Tutoring for SmarthinkingSmarthinking is an online tutoring company that has been in existence since 1999. It seems that the majority of the tutoring done via Smarthinking is for college students. All tutoring sessions are completed online, so there is no need for a phone. You also don’t need a webcam, microphone, or anything like that. Just your computer. The company hires qualified, highly-educated tutors to work part-time on a set weekly schedule to help students in need of academic assistance.

How much does Smarthinking pay?

The pay rate depends on your degree level. They don’t list the exact rate on their website, but the digging around I’ve done on this indicates the amount is anywhere from $10 and higher per hour depending on the degree you hold. Unless things have changed, they can either mail you a check or they will send your payment via direct deposit. Payments are made twice a month.

Are you hired as an employee or an independent contractor?

If Smarthinking hires you, you are considered an employee, which means they will withhold taxes from your pay. As an employee, you are also paid for your training time.

How long does training last?

The training process (which is all done online) lasts anywhere from 10 to 15 hours.

How does scheduling work?

Smarthinking asks all their tutors to commit themselves to at least nine hours of work per week. If you’re hired, you’ll have to let them know what hours you are available to work each week and on what days. This schedule will then be set for the remainder of each semester. I’ve read that if you need more hours at any point, it is sometimes possible to pick up extra shifts here and there.

Can you work for Smarthinking if you are not a US resident?

You can, but you have to be able to be paid via a US bank account.

What positions is Smarthinking hiring for?

I’ve seen several leads pop up for Smarthinking lately. As of January 12, 2012, it appears that they need tutors in chemistry, accounting, advanced statistics, math, Spanish, physics, pharmacology, finance, economics, and IT office. Keep in mind of course that their employment needs probably fluctuate all the time.

What kind of education do you need to get hired by Smarthinking?

The required educational background will vary depending on the tutoring position you are applying for, but it appears that all tutors must have a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree.

This is timely. My daughter was asking me about online tutoring the other day. She’s wanting to make some extra money for her upcoming wedding. I’m going to send her this link.
