One site to use if you want to break into Transcription is Tigerfish, a company that has been around since 1989. They do not require that you’ve had any previous transcription experience to get started, although they do ask you to take a test first before you’re “in.” Please note that they may or may not be actively recruiting workers at this time, although the employment page is always up on their website.
What is transcription?
If you don’t know what transcription is, basically you are listening to an audio file and typing out what you hear. This isn’t as easy as it sounds. You need to have a good ear and be able to pay very close attention to detail. Also, different companies have their own specific guidelines and styles they want you to follow. It’s a way to earn a living from home that can be very lucrative, and it’s possible to break into general transcription without any experience at all through sites like Tigerfish, Quicktate, Appenscribe, and a few others. Getting your feet wet with sites like these can lead the way to better paying transcription jobs in the future.
How much does Tigerfish pay?
They don’t list the rate of pay on their website unfortunately, but one person stated on WAHM that she was able to earn about $15 per typing hour which she says is roughly the same as $60 per audio hour. I am not a transcriptionist so I can’t confirm or deny that to be accurate and again this info came from a forum so I can’t vouch for it, but maybe it gives you some idea. If anyone can confirm the rate of pay here, please comment below.
Do they hire outside the US?
They only hire people who are legal United States citizens.
What are the technical requirements to apply?
You need high speed internet, a Windows based computer, a phone number where they can reach you, and you’ll have to download a free program called Express Scribe to take the test. If you are hired, they say you’ll need to buy Start Stops Power Play for Windows Media to do the actual work. The equipment is around $200 brand new unfortunately, but I would bet that you could look around on ebay or some other site and find it much cheaper if you tried. I can’t find any information on whether or not Tigerfish reimburses you for this after you start, but I’m concluding that they probably don’t.
What does the test involve?
They ask you to first download and read their style guide. Then, you have to listen to and transcribe three different audio files. Tigerfish has specific instructions on exactly how this needs to be done on their employment page and it looks pretty simple to me. When you’re done, you’ll need to email the files to them along with how long it took you to transcribe each one.
How long does it take to hear back?
Tigerfish claims to get tons of emails, and for this reason it might take a little while to hear back (if you do at all). So don’t get too discouraged if you apply and don’t receive an immediate response, just give them some time. If several months go by and still nothing, it may be worth trying again.
What do people say about Tigerfish?
I have so far read nothing negative about them, other than that some people apply and don’t hear back. Here’s a thread on WAHM where some people are discussing them. The thread is from 2008, so it’s a little old.
