Convergys Call Centers at Home

in Customer Service, Phone Jobs, Tech Support

call center at homeIf you’ve been looking into call centers at home, Convergys might be a good option. I’ve reviewed several of these phone jobs already, and this is one that I’ve had on my list that I’m just now getting around to discussing. Convergys is a rather large company — they have many employees all over the U.S., and they occasionally hire in the U.K. and in Canada as well! Here’s a brief rundown on how it all works:

How much does Convergys pay?

Pay at Convergys may actually be a little on the low side. I can’t find an exact number because they make their employees sign non-disclosure agreements, but I’ve seen figures quoted ranging from $7 per hour up to as much as $12 per hour. I kind of get the idea that people doing technical support might earn more.  U.S. agents are paid once every two weeks via either direct deposit or through a pay card option. People in the U.K. are paid monthly. They don’t list the frequency of pay for Canadians unfortunately.

What are the requirements to apply?

You need at least a high school education or GED equivalent and you must be at least 18 years old or older. A background in customer service is not required, but may help your chances of getting on here. As stated above, the company hires from the U.K. and Canada as well as the U.S., although their employment needs for these countries vary, which is why it’s a good idea to keep an eye on their website to see if they have openings at any given time. As of the date of this blog post, Convergys does not need workers from the U.K. or Canada, but they are hiring in the U.S. within certain states. I don’t want to list the states here because I’m sure they change on fairly regular basis and my info might become outdated. You can view this link to see if they are hiring in your state and also to see if they have openings in the U.K. or Canada. The company will also do a background check on you. If hired, you’ll need to be able to ensure no background noise. This means that working around small children (or big children who are loud) and pets that are noisy is a no-no.

What about technical requirements?

You need high-speed internet, a headset, and a computer that is wired in (no wireless). From what I’ve read, you can use a Voip phone, but your internet speed has to pass their connection test.

How does the application process work?

You can fill out the application form directly on the Convergys website and upload your resume. If contacted, you’ll have to do an interview that will most likely take place over the phone. There is also training to go through which you will be paid for.

What about scheduling?

There are lots of different shifts available at Convergys. Some people work during the day, some in the evening, and some people work the graveyard shift. They have both full-time and part-time positions available ranging from 16 to 40 hours per week. You agree to your schedule when you’re hired and they expect you to stick to it. You can bid for shifts you want.

Does Convergys offer benefits?

Yes, they do. You can get health insurance, life insurance, 401K, and paid time off. However, these benefits are not a given for each person who works here. There are also occasionally other incentives. For example, some Convergys workers take calls for a popular satellite company. In return for this, they get free satellite service! Some people don’t qualify for benefits because they’re on lines that are temporary or because of their location. So if benefits are a must for you, be sure and ask about what you’ll receive during your interview.

What do people say about Convergys?

The reviews are mixed … but this is no surprise because the company is pretty large. There are both happy and unhappy campers. However, Convergys seems to hire on a regular basis and I didn’t read enough negatives not to post about them. Work at home jobs in Canada and the U.K. are also something that I want to focus more on since I do get lots of inquiries from people from these areas looking for work in call centers at home, and I was happy to see that Convergys is occasionally open to applications from these places, so I definitely wanted to give them a mention on the site.

If you’d like to apply at Convergys, you can do so here.

I *almost* started working here when I first started working at home, however I knew then that I wanted to start getting personal clients and I didn’t know how feasible that would be with their mandatory scheduling. I do think it can work out great for those that need and/or want a set schedule.

I too looked into this one a long time ago, before I began at LiveOps. I don’t think I met their computer requirements but it seemed like a good job. Great review!

Hm, the ability to have a VoIP phone interest me but I’m not sure if I can work a set amount of hours now that I’ve experienced what it feels like to work as a freelancer :P

Great post though, a lot of people are going to want to know this information!

Just a couple of questions about Convergys, that I am hoping you may be able to answer for me. On their website it says you don’t need a landline as they utilize voice over technology for inbound and outbound call’s. I am not sure I understand what that means exactly. Then another section states you need a telephone with mute button. I use Century Link for internet, it passed all their tests. But what I need to know is do I have to have a home phone installed? I know I have to have a analog headset, but just didn’t understand the part about you don’t need a landline etc.. If you could give me some understanding of this it would be great.
Thank you;
Ginger
